AlJazeera in an article published on June 10 said India is currently facing an international backlash over Islamophobic comments against the Prophet Muhammad and his wife Aisha

Claim:

This Islamophobia was readily espoused and propagated in electoral politics by the RSS’s political wing the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (1951-1977) and the Janata Party (1977-1980) – both predecessors of the BJP.

Counterclaim:

Qatari news outlet AlJazeera espouses highly biased, bigoted and prejudiced feelings about India and the government of the day. Grossly selective in its approach to prove its point on Islamophobia, a narrative which sounds contradictory in India where the Constitution and the society equally emphasize on unity in diversity, the Qatari news outlet needs to take account RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement made in September 2021. He had said Hindus and Muslims of India share the same ancestry. He had broadly defined what Hindu was meant by and how it didn’t associate itself with any caste or linguistic definition.

“The basis of unity is our motherland and our glorious tradition. For us, the word Hindu is the synonym for motherland, ancestors and the legacy of Indian culture. The word Hindu doesn’t denote any caste or linguistic definition, but it’s the name of a culture that guides the development and uplift of every human being. All those who accept this, irrespective of any caste, creed, religion or language, are Hindus and in this backdrop, we consider every Indian a Hindu,” RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat said.

In this backdrop, where is the question of Islamophobia in India? Al Jazeera should avoid setting any communal agenda and rather, look at broader aspects of Indians’ understanding of the society they live in. This understanding was dealt with categorically by the RSS Chief when he said, “there is a need to guard against fear-mongering that Sangh is against minorities or that Islam is in danger in India.” He said Hindus and Muslims share the same ancestry, but those with ill intentions like to insist that Indians are not one people but separate.

Claim:

Since Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, Islamophobia has become a matter of state policy.

Counterclaim:

Fact is that since 2014, the Indian government has been working for the all-around development of Muslims without any appeasement, discrimination and political exploitation. Several schemes run by the Minority Affairs Ministry in India are working wonders for minorities, especially for Muslims as they are the largest minority in India. Some of these schemes are Naya Savera, Seekho Aur Kamao, Nai Manzil, Nai Roshni, Hamari Dharohar, Nai Udaan, Gharib Nawaz Employment Scheme and Shaadi Mubarak Scheme.

Under the Nai Udaan scheme, several successful candidates from Muslim community are being provided with coaching for top government jobs in India. Besides major beneficiary of welfare schemes launched by the government has been members of the Muslim community. Out of the 2.31 crore houses built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, 31 per cent were allocated in 25 minority-dominated areas, 33 per cent beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi were minorities and out of the nine crore beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, 37 per cent were from the minority communities. Besides, 36 percent of beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana are minority community members.

“204 million Muslims have felt at home in India. Its centuries-old syncretic heritage has preserved Islamic values. I applaud the clarification and condemnation of anti-Prophet statements by the Indian government,” Bahrain-based researcher Amjad Taha recently tweeted.
